"Spring Grand Sumo Tournament" (First day on the 9th, Edion Arena Osaka)
New yokozuna Toyonoryu (Tatsunami) made final preparations at his stable in Osaka on the 8th. His master, stablemaster Tatsunami (former komusubi Asahifuji), revealed his "advice for avoiding yokozuna sumo."
With the first day of the tournament approaching, the stablemaster Tatsunami explained the condition of his apprentice, saying, "He's doing well. I don't think there's any problem." Regarding the condition of his right elbow, which caused him to go to the hospital due to pain, he said, "Well, it's a learning experience. He should learn while he studies and at the very least, achieve results close to the championship. I hope he doesn't feel too much pressure and continues to do what he has been doing."
Yokozuna sumo is about receiving the opponent's attacks, forcing them to use their strength, and then overpowering them. However, Toyonoryu weighs just 150kg, which is less than the average for a makuuchi wrestler. Stablemaster Tatsunami revealed, "As a Yokozuna, it's better not to put too much strength into your shoulders. I told him, 'You don't need to be obsessed with good sumo.'" He continued, "If you focus on strong sumo, and on straightforward sumo, then you'll be fine. You're not a big guy by any means. It's important to start the match quickly and take the initiative to win."
With the first day of the tournament just around the corner, Toyonoryu was warming up with practice and other training. "I'm excited, but I'm still scared. Well, I guess I just have to do it. Is it different from before? Of course it is," he said, revealing his feelings. Regarding the third consecutive new Yokozuna tournament victory following Kisenosato and Terunofuji, he said enthusiastically, "If I concentrate hard on one day, the results will come."
