Badminton player Chiharu Shida comments on being stalked, "I've been followed even into the hotel" and warns, "Please support the players, not their private lives"
Chiharu Shida (Saishinkan Pharmaceutical), a women's badminton player who won the bronze medal in the women's doubles at last summer's Paris Olympics, returned to Narita Airport on the 14th from the Asian Championships (Ningbo, China), where she won the silver medal, and spoke about the stalking that has been occurring in China.
For about a year and a half, she had been stalked by a fanatic fan, and during this tournament, she was followed not only to the match venue, but also inside the hotel. Feeling in danger due to the increasingly escalating stalking, she updated her social media just before the tournament to warn people. "It had been a long time since I had been able to relax even in my private life, so I decided to take this action," she explained.
After the broadcast, the fans were understanding and security was there, so they were able to concentrate on the match. Shida expressed her gratitude, saying, "The security guards followed us to our hotel room. We tried not to go out too much. We were grateful for the support."
Shida made a breakthrough when she won the bronze medal at the Paris Olympics, and already has over one million followers on Instagram. "I understand that people's feelings of support are so strong that it makes them feel that way, and I'm happy about that, but we are also athletes on the court. I'd be happy if people would support us not in our private lives, but in the gym, as players," she said.
