Swimmer Daiya Seto comments on some reports: "I say it's not right" and "Four years ago they wrote whatever they wanted" and after the reports were published, "I was mentally exhausted"
Daiya Seto (CHARIS & Co.), a male swimmer and member of the Paris Olympic team, departed for the World Short Course Championships (Budapest) on the 6th. In an interview at Haneda Airport, he mentioned that he had expressed his intention to lodge a strong protest on his social media and consider legal action against some media reports that had published articles about his home life away from competitive swimming.
On November 20th, Shukan Bunshun published an article announcing that Seto and his wife, former Japanese national diving team member Yuka Mabuchi, would be living separately from this spring and would begin divorce negotiations. Afterwards, Seto wrote under the name "All of us at TEAM DAIYA" that "publishing an article about my family life that has nothing to do with my athletic activities is clearly an invasion of privacy, and some of the statements included are defamatory."
Although it was before he left for an international tournament that day, he explained in his own words the circumstances that led for him to write on his social media. Referring to past cases, he said, "When reports were published, we had to say that they were wrong. When reports were published four years ago, I didn't say that they were wrong, and they wrote whatever they wanted. This time, I wanted to speak out clearly, so I made the comment."
After the news was published, Seto said he was feeling down, "I was mentally exhausted." However, he is looking forward to the World Short Course Championships, and responded firmly to the interview that day in his usual straightforward manner. "It's a tough road, but I'm going to do what I have to do," he said with determination, aiming for an unprecedented seventh consecutive victory in the 400m individual medley.
